Just in time for Kolkata Knight Riders’ first game this IPL, Burj Khalifa lit up in purple and golden colours welcoming the franchise in ‘Dubai style.’
Burj Khalifa lights up for Kolkata Knight Riders
Four days into the Indian Premier League (IPL), there’s a great deal of anticipation surrounding Kolkata Knight Riders, playing their season-debut match versus Mumbai Indians tomorrow at the Sheikh Zayed Stadium in Abu Dhabi.
While the Shah Rukh Khan-owned franchise is yet to make their mark this IPL, Dubai’s Burj Khalifa gave them a grand welcome to get fans cheering, by illuminating the team’s colours and logo on its façade featuring this season’s tagline, #HaiTayaar, followed by its captain, Dinesh Karthik, and star players including Andre Russell, Kuldeep Yadhav, Shubhman Gill, Eoin Morgan, Nitish Rana and Sunil Narine. The light show was accompanied by a water fountain show choreographed to KKR’s theme song, ‘Korbo Lorbo Jeetbo.” Check it out:
Mumbai Indians and Kolkata Knight Riders face-off
Kolkata Knight Riders will be hoping to begin their campaign on a winning note facing one of their toughest opponents, Mumbai Indians. The two teams squared off 25 times in IPL, with Mumbai winning 19 times. It’s worth mentioning MI won nine out of their last ten matches versus KKR. The only time Shah Rukh Khan’s team emerged victorious of late was in last year’s infamous high-octane match after scoring 232, courtesy of Shubhman Gill’s 76(45) Andre Russell’s quick-fire 80*(40).

Last November saw Burj Khalifa display a special light show to mark Shah Rukh Khan’s 54th birthday. It’s only fitting for the skyscraper to wish him a happy birthday, having been a brand ambassador for Dubai Tourism and having shot numerous films in the emirate.
In case if you’ve been wondering why Kolkata Knight Riders is the only team to take over Burj Khalifa’s iconic façade, Shah Rukh Khan is a close friend of Emaar Properties’ Chairman, Mohamed Alabbar.
