Umm Al Quwain’s abandoned aeroplane
If you’re anyone like us, a long-timer in the UAE with countless road trips to Umm Al Quwain and the northern emirates, chances are you’ve spotted the infamous aeroplane near the Barracuda Beach Resort lying idle and gathering dust.
It’s quite a popular spot for adventurers and for those seeking to get an Instagram-worthy image of late. Fun fact, an Arabic rapper even shot a music video inside and on top of the plane.
Rare footage of the plane’s landing resurfaces the internet
While there isn’t any verified information about the plane’s history and the reason behind its puzzling landing, a lot of speculations claim the aircraft was built during the Soviet-era and made an emergency landing due to a sandstorm.
The National broke the news yesterday claiming the aircraft was named Ilyushin IL-76, landing in Umm Al Quwain between 1999 and 2000. It was built in the then-USSR during the ‘70s and was frequently operated in the UAE from the mid-’90s until the dawn of the new millennium.
