Dubai on the UFC map
Mounir was born and raised in Tunisia and trained in Canada until he received an offer to move to Dubai and begin his MMA career. The welterweight champion took part in the Dubai Fighting Championship, winning two first-round-wins versus Andy Cons and Ashkan Mehrdadpoor. The 32-year-old rose through the ranks winning fights in the Brave Combat Federation and Abu Dhabi Warriors Fighting Championship, until he got a call by UFC President Dana White to make his debut at the first edition of Fight Island in the capital.
How a friend helped Mounir get his UFC debut
Dana White got his eyes on Mounir Lazzezz thanks to a friend showing him the Arab mixed martial artist’s highlight reel while dining at a restaurant in Las Vegas.
Speaking to MMA Junkie, Lazzezz says his friend ran into Dana White at a restaurant and showed his reel convincing the UFC President to sign him up with a fight. He contacted Lazzezz via social media offering him a bout, to which he immediately agreed. The rest, as you’ve seen, is history.
